The police in the UK apprehended over a thousand vehicles without motor insurance on the road. This new initiative was first started in County Durham but has since been expanded to cover the whole of the UK .
Under the new powers, police that find vehicles on the roads which do not have motor insurance are seized. The drivers are then given 14 days to prove that they have taken out motor insurance for their vehicles.
They are also additional charges of towing costs which can average around £105. Also storage charges which can be around £12 daily.
If you fail to provide proof of car insurance it will mean the car is crushed and shipped to China , and the owner is then prosecuted for driving without motor insurance.
Police have so far seized and crushed around 630 vehicles.
This scheme has been helped by a new database that has been created of all the insured vehicles in the UK and number plate detection cameras. This has been funded by the motor insurance industry.
The campaign has prevented as many as 2,000 accidents by removing unsafe vehicles and unlicensed drivers from the roads. This is an approximation from motor insurance companies.
