Car Insurance for Young Drivers with Penalty Points
If you've been caught speeding in the UK, you'll probably have received a fine and a number of penalty points added to your licence. The amount can vary, but as the law stands right now, the minimum penalty for speeding is 3 points and a fine of £100.
The points system
A driver can expect a fixed fine and three penalty points for every minor speeding offence. Points are added to your licence and will remain for four years. You could be disqualified from driving if you tot up 12 or more penalty points within a three year period.
Young drivers need to be even more careful - if you get more than six points within two years of passing your test, your driving licence will be revoked.
Penalty points and insurance
Do penalty points affect insurance? In many cases, yes. Young drivers with penalty points might face an increase to their car insurance premium, though some insurers accept up to three points without it affecting the premium too badly, if at all.
The reason for the increased cost is simply that drivers with speeding points on their licence are classed as a high risk by an insurance company. They are more likely to be involved in an accident resulting in a claim.
The more points you have, the more difficult it will be to get insurance companies to quote at all.
